Working people across the world are gathering today to celebrate all we’ve won and to commemorate the struggles that came before us. May Day also serves as a reminder of all we have left to win — and that the path to get there runs directly through our nation’s union halls.

Happy May Day!

Today, we honor the hundreds of thousands of workers who have needlessly lost their lives through preventable workplace hazards or occupational diseases.

More than 5,000 workers died on the job in 2021, according to the AFL-CIO’s annual Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect. Workers in the forestry, agriculture, warehouses, mining and construction industries are at especially high risk – a risk made higher by an underfunded OSHA and employer efforts to maximize profits by disregarding the safety of their employees.

Each year, on the last Wednesday of April, OPEIU celebrates Administrative Professionals’ Day. Secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists and other administrative support professionals are responsible for a wide variety of duties and deserve recognition and respect for their hard work throughout the year.

OPEIU is proud to represent administrative professionals in offices, credit unions, nonprofits, hospitals, labor unions, and universities and colleges around the country.
