Join Today's Vigil to Honor Birmingham Church Bombing Victims

  • 15 September 2020

Today, Sept. 15, marks the 57th anniversary of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. The AFL-CIO plans to honor the legacy of the four young girls who perished that day – Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Carol Denise McNair – with a virtual candlelight vigil today at noon. The AFL-CIO is also calling on members to sign a ten-point pledge for social, racial and economic justice

No evil is extinguished unless good people act. OPEIU calls on all those who believe racial and economic justice are intimately intertwined to take action today to stand up against white supremacy.

Happy Labor Day

  • 7 September 2020

OPEIU wishes you, your family, your friends and your co-workers a happy Labor Day. Today marks a celebration of working people’s contributions to our country, in both good times and bad. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the importance of working people — who we know have always been essential — even clearer.

While we celebrate with our loved ones, we ask you to remember those unable to celebrate today because they don't have the day off, took an extra shift to provide for their families or are no longer with us. We owe it to those without a voice — or rather, those whose voice has been stripped from them by decades of anti-worker animus in the halls of power — to ensure all working people are treated with dignity and respect.
