OPEIU members and their local unions are hard at work across the country ensuring we break the anti-worker majority in Congress and elect pro-labor candidates up and down the ballot. We are knocking doors in swing districts in Michigan, backing up-and-coming leaders in California, and investing in union members running in Ohio, Tennessee and Pennsylvania.

As we approach election day, OPEIU members can and should get involved by:

• Making a plan to vote as soon as possible. Make sure you’re registered to vote and you know where your polling place is;
• Talking to co-workers, family members and friends about your plans to vote and the pro-worker candidates in your area;
• Getting involved! Contact your OPEIU local union to join door-knocking efforts in support of pro-worker candidates; and
• Contributing to OPEIU’s political fund, the J.B. Moss Voice of the Electorate Fund. Ask your local union how!

The stakes are high! The cost of living is skyrocketing, Big Tech is buying political support for their harmful data centers, worker protection agencies are being dismantled, and Congress is driving millions of Americans off their insurance to pay for tax cuts for the rich. The good news is meaningful progress on all these issues is within reach if working people vote. The bad news is that there are two forces working to make it harder for us to get our voices heard.

Firstly, the federal government is trying to make it more difficult for our members to vote. An unprecedented proposal from the United States Postal Service would have blocked delivery of mail ballots to voters who do not appear in ICE’s deeply flawed citizen database, even if those voters are legally and properly registered in their state. Even though this scheme was blocked by the Courts for the 2026 election, the process has sowed confusion and fear that will discourage some from voting at all.

MAKE SURE YOU’RE REGISTERED TO VOTE

As if that were not enough, things won’t calm down when votes are cast. We expect there will be efforts to interfere with vote counting or improperly deny election certification, as we saw in the 2020 presidential election and even this year in California’s primary elections.

Both problems have the same solution: ensuring as many people as possible vote as early as possible. The more people who vote, the harder it will be to contest the results. The earlier you vote, the easier it is to resolve any issues that arise.
