Upsides for Some Remote Workers; Lost Pay and Security for Others

  • 27 July 2020
Working from home creates economic winners and losers. It can benefit highly skilled employees but depress others’ wages and make it hard to organize.

When the pandemic hit and tens of millions of American workers suddenly redeployed to their basements and living rooms, it was easy to imagine that their workdays would unfold roughly as before, with communication tools like Slack and Zoom substituting for face-to-face interactions (and maybe with slightly greater multitasking opportunities).

TELL YOUR SENATORS: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

  • 23 July 2020

Since May, the HEROES Act – which would provide relief to frontline workers and to working families amid the COVID-19 crisis – has sat untouched on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk. The protection of millions of retirees' and would-be retirees’ pension plans hangs in the balance as Sen. McConnell refuses to take up this important legislation, and endangers a lifetime of sacrifices from working people who deferred compensation in service of retirement security.

Sen. McConnell’s immoral strategy – to delay, obstruct and minimize relief for working families – must fail.

CALL YOUR SENATOR TODAY AND TELL THEM TO SUPPORT WORKING FAMILIES, PROTECT FRONTLINE WORKERS, SAFEGUARD PENSIONS, AND INVEST IN COMMUNITIES – NOT CORPORATIONS.

TELL YOUR SENATOR: Support the HEROES Act
H.R. 6800, the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, includes an emergency workplace infectious disease standard; gives aid for state and local governments, public schools, the U.S. Postal Service, and pension funding relief; keeps workers on payrolls to avoid mass layoffs; extends unemployment insurance; provides more direct payments to working people; extends health care coverage; provides housing and food benefits; and much more. Working people are desperate for our leaders to put partisanship aside and do what is right for our health, our economy and our country. The HEROES Act is a major step forward.

Virginia becomes first state to mandate COVID-19 precautions in all workplaces

  • 16 July 2020

Social distancing and other precautions against COVID-19 will soon be mandatory in workplaces around Virginia under emergency pandemic safety regulations finalized Wednesday.

The new rules, proposed by Gov. Ralph Northam and adopted by the state’s Safety and Health Codes Board over strenuous objections from business groups, make Virginia the first state in the country to pass comprehensive safety rules for employers.
